What's Driving Your Dreams?
And is it sustainable?
If you were curious about last week’s silence, I blame the intense plant medicine journey I went on that weekend. Ya girl needed some time after being catapulted into space. 🙌🏻
But I’m back in this realm now with more clarity… and more questions. Isn’t that the way it goes?
Around here, we talk about the big ideas. We talk about projects that light us up and point us in meaningful directions. We also talk about the shit that goes on behind the scenes, like the pervasive challenges of the mind and how often those get in the way of actually moving the needle for ourselves.
Thematically, I’ve been sharing my ongoing projects that are intended to move me in a direction I am excited about. Big picture stuff. And with that I shared how (what I’m calling) the heebie-jeebies can spook us right when it matters most.
The reason I talk about this stuff so much is that I’ve never grown faster than when I am actively pulling these things into my awareness and looking at them straight on.
So here’s another perspective I’d like to muse over with you.
Is passion sustainable for long-term projects?
*Laughs in Cancer rising* (That means I’m heavily influenced by the moon… which moves through signs like every 2.5 days)
Ideas can be intoxicating. And since you’re here, I have a feeling that you too enjoy mainlining new ideas. There’s just something so delicious about that new, tasty morsel of an idea popping into your head. It smells fresh, decadent, and like you could both devour and savor it at the same time.
Wait, is this cute aggression… but for ideas?
This is what I mean by passion. It’s hard to remember a time that I started playing with an (incredible) idea and I wasn’t immediately enamored by it, thinking it would be me and that idea against the world for eternity…
That’s always how it starts for me. I can have the best of intentions and then some time passes and… whatever. Shmeh. It just doesn’t have that electricity anymore.
For the record, I’m talking about ideas. Like the new structure of something that might affect my future. Business stuff. Offers. Positioning. What I’m known for. That stuff.. For you, it might be a little different. For me, it’s a little less common for individual projects. As, case-in-point, I’ve been known to lock in for 3-5 months on a single piece of art. Like this one…

But the stuff that’s more like understanding my shape IN the world—that’s where it gets spicy (Could be my batch of 12th H planets or Neptune as my MC ruler. It ain’t easy finding your shape when you literally are the void 😂).
You might know by now that, once upon a time, I was in a very comfy career as an art prof and chose to leave that behind for reasons that were equally chaotic and empowering (Check out my earlier writings if you want the tea).
So that means I had no idea that I would have no idea what to do when a predetermined path was no longer ahead of me. All of a sudden I was making it allll up. Still am. To this very moment.
That said, it’s really no surprise when those of us who are forging our own path want to find some certainty within SOMETHING along the way. It’s only natural to try to feel for something solid in the dark.
And passion fits that bill because it’s hard to miss. It can feel super resonant. It can be an experience that creates a memory that sticks with you. The intensity is hard to deny… when it’s happening.
But just like a tasty morsel on your tongue, I find that the flavor of it doesn’t last forever.
This also makes me think of a bell or a gong. The moment you strike it, that energy comes out strong, in waves that are meant to grab your focus. And as that sound naturally begins to dissipate, that intensity does too.
So here’s my hunch:
Hitching your idea wagon to something that will naturally come to a state of entropy at some point, doesn’t seem to be the move… for long term movement. Aka sustainability.
So what is?
Oh, I’d tell you if I knew.
Right now, this is as far as I got. But I do think more insight is just under this rock I’m picking up. When that happens, it’ll probably be shared right here, so I hope you’re subscribed so you don’t miss it.
Thoughts?
So, what do you think? Does passion seem to be a sustainable driver for your dreams and goals? Maybe it depends on the intensity of the initial spark and what your timeline is? I want to know what you think about this question, because chances are, you’ve had your fair share of experience with this too. Leave a comment below to share it with me and let’s put this puzzle together.
Until next time, my friend. Create bravely and keep betting on yourself.
